Chen Fangwu, one of the veterans of Creation Society, is a famous Chinese literary critic and a proletariat revolutionist in the history of modern literature. During the period of 1920 s to 1930 s, Chen has experienced three turns: from “returned students from Japan who studies engineering to literati, revolutionary soldier to revolutionary literati, litterateur to revolutionist. After the disillusionment of the ideal of “Science saves the Nation” movement, Chen Fangwu of saving the nation from subjugation to literature, toward the road of literature, he launched literary activities and put forward the “construction of criticism” theory, successfully achieving the “turn” for the first time in life. With the development of the situation of the Chinese revolution, Chen Fangwu actively joined the revolution, absorbing the revolution nutrients. After the failure of the Great Revolution, Chen Fangwu tried to advocate the “revolutionary literature”, growing up to be a revolutionary writer, accomplishing the second “turn” in life. In the process of the advocation of “revolutionary literature”, Chen Fangwu was deeply influenced by Marxism and decided to withdraw from the literary world to save the nation's attention to the social revolution to join the communist party of China, he engaged in revolutionary activities and grew up to be a revolutionist, realizing the third “turn” of life. The essence of the “turn” can be summarized as from scientific revolution to literary revolution, from “literary revolution” to “revolutionary literature”, from literary revolution to social revolution. As a representative of “May 4th” intellectuals, Chen Fangwu's “turn” during 1920 s to 1930 s is the choice of “May 4th” intellectual life path, the spirit of “for the society” overwhelms the spirit “for life”, showing a strong sense of mission and social responsibility and the pursuit of personal value, which made a significance influence to the development of contemporary intellectuals.
