| This is a translation project report on the analysis of the subtitle text from English TV drama Downton Abbey VI. Films and TV programs, as a comprehensive information carrier concerning politics, economy, culture, and some other fields, have captured the part time of a great many audiences and matured as an important tool for culture and spirit display of different countries owing to convenient communication media. Due to the difficulties in understanding brought by distinctive languages and cultures, subtitle translation, which plays an indispensible role in cross-cultrural communication of movies and TV programs, directly exerts influence on market exploitation and cultural penetration of these works.Compared with the booming film and television industry, subtitle translation attracts far less attention. Research on this type of translaton is emerging with budding theoretical system establishment and practice development. The author selects subtitles from Downton Abbey VI in the hope of finding solutions to difficulties the author encountered during translation process and offering some tips to other translators.There are mainly three difficulties, namely the translation of English humor, culture-loaded words and long sentences. In the light of the characteristics of subtitle translation and with the help of Eco-translatology proposed by Prof. Hu Gengshen, the author summarizes several translation strategies to solve the above-mentioned difficulties. Literal translation and compensation are adopted for the translation of English humor; literal translation, literal translation with annotation, and culture substitution are for the translation of culture-loaded words; splitting-up, reduction, and inversion are for the translation of long sentences. Translators need to make comprehensive use of them and be more innovative to summarize more strategies. |
