Abstract/Summary:
Downton Abbey is a well-produced British drama popular with both Chinese and foreign audiences. It tells the stories of the virtual manor owner Earl Grantham’s family.Based on the“Three-Dimensional”Transformation Theory of Eco-translatology,this thesis takes the Chinese subtitles translated by two subtitle groups named“the Polanxiong Subtitle Translation Group”[1]and“the Downton Abbey Subtitle Translation Team of YYe Ts”[2]as a corpus to study how to translate subtitle of British drama.By means of comparing the two subtitle translations and in accordance with the characteristics of film subtitle, the author summarizes some translation strategies of E-C subtitle translation for film and television works from the perspective of“Three-Dimensional”Transformation Theory:1,language dimension:a.the choice of words in the target language is related to the personalities of the characters combining to the fact that film subtitle is personalized;b.many obscure and advanced vocabularies shouldn’t be piled up if the source text is simple for the reason that film subtitle is colloquial and instantaneous;c.correspondence between Chinese and English subtitles can be ignored for the expression habits;2,cultural dimension:a.literal translation with the addition of concise annotation is a way to comply with instantaneity of film subtitle;b.English idioms should be translated into corresponding Chinese ones;3,communicative dimension:it is more effective to use plain target language to translate humorous discourse and euphemism;4,image dimension should be added to improve the subtitle translation methods. From a certain perspective on image dimension:sometimes adaptation and amplification are needed to match the picture. To sum up,this thesis is significant in expanding the study of Eco-Translatology and guiding the translation work of subtitle groups.
