People’s Daily is the most authoritative and influential newspaper in China. As a national newspaper, it releases the latest government decree of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government in a reliable way. Also, it reports events at home and abroad, and reflects the needs of the masses. The editorial page of People’s Daily, giving comments of hot spots of society, faithfully records the developments in various fields of new China.The People’s Daily Press has published the complete works of the People’s Daily editorial(totally 15 copies) in 2013. It includes all editorials of People’s Daily, about 7208 articles since June 15, 1948, to December 31, 2012. On the basis of diachronic development period, the corpora is divided into five parts: the war of liberation period, the national economy recovery period, the socialist transformation period, the comprehensive socialism construction period, the "cultural revolution" period and the new period of reform and opening-up. The corpus, with historical value and news value, is the first set of newspaper editorials collection in China, which records the development history of the country without any abridger, and that makes the corpora unique and valuable. It is also provides an authority theory for the party and government organs, as well as all levels of the library to study. As a old saying goes, “Reading books begin with covers, reading newspapers begin with headlines." As the key of the editorial, the headline should highly summarize the editorial. With the characteristics above, the terms of a headline should be always commonly used, generality and normative, and be the epitome of the modern Chinese vocabulary system. All these place a high value on the headline of editorial for lexicology research. Chinese vocabulary has experienced a dramatically transition from monosyllabic word to disyllable word. During this process, both the structure and the meaning of word have changed.In this paper, writing upon which later work is based on the editorialheadlines of People’s Daily, the author has given qualitative and quantitative research to study the disyllable notional word under the theory of Word-building, to reveal the mechanics and the types of disyllable notional words in People’s Daily headlines, as well as to analysis the characteristics of various types of word-formation. On this point, the paper would give a great help to the studying of Chinese disyllable word.The paper sorts out the 7208 People’s Daily editorials with segmentation, indexing and redundancy checking by using the computer information processing technology. In headlines, according to the statistics, there are 3173 disyllable notional words have been used. They are 1389 nouns, 1307 verbs, 278 adjectives, 106 adverbs, 67 distinguish words, 67 numerals, and 3 quantifiers.There are four compositions contended in this paper.The first part is introduction. In this part, the author mainly introduces the purpose of this research, as well as the significance and theoretical basis of the study.The second part is an introduction about the database construction of "the headlines of editorial corpora". The author shows the first-phase preparations on studying the standards of defining the disyllable notional words and quoting the segments.The third part contains four chapters, which are nouns, verbs, adjectives, and other characteristics. In this part, the author analyzes disyllable notional words in editorial headlines of certain characteristics.The fourth part summarizes the research results, and draws the conclusion.
