Compound Words. "mencius" Two-tone Study

This thesis is special on the lexicology in Mencius. It mainly studies the amount and character of the disyllable and compound word to prepare the basic language database for the next studying that prescribes the character of the disyllable and compound word and explains the emergence and development of it. The author attaches more importance to the relationship of semantic between morphemes than the way of word-formation. Especially analyzing the coordinate compound word and the subordinate compound word, the author studies them from three perspections which are the grammatical character of the morpheme,the relationship of grammar between morphemes and the relationship of semantic that lies between the morphemes and between morpheme and compound word. It forms a total outline of the disyllable and compound words in Mencius from grammatical formation to the relationship of semantic.In Introduction, the author discusses the significance of lexically studying in Mencius, the present research, difficulty, and ways that process the language database. The principle that is used to distinguish word from word group is set up, and the principle to the different coordinate compound words should be different because the lexicalization of the coordinate compound words lies in differentdegrees.Secondly, the two most productive ways of word-formation are documented, the coordinate compound words and the subordinate compound words which are the adjective-noun types.The coordinate compound words that the lexicalization isin different degrees are made diffrent kinds in accordiance with the grammatical character. The relationship of semantic that lies between the morphemes and between morpheme and compound word is mainly documented. To the subordinate compound word, it is discussed that the semantic function of the former morpheme, the semantic type of morphemes, and the relationship of semantic between the morphemes.Finally, the other ways of word-formation in Mencius are documented. In the last part, the way of word-formation of the disyllable and compound word in Mencius is compared to the one in the other books. The main way of word-formation of the disyllable and compound word has been formed in Mencius. The author analyzes the different ability of word-formation.The thesis has an calculation on the appearing frequency of the words by the way of computer and its database, and man-made calculation is used to make data accurate.
