Film Dialogue Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Critical Discourse Analysis

Taking the dialogue subtitles and English translation of Zhang Yimou's film Curse of the Golden Flower as corpus, this thesis establishes a bilingual parallel database of the source text and the target text. Under the guidance of the theoretical framework critical discourse analysis(CDA), this thesis conducts a comparative analysis, aiming at revealing the relationship among language, power and ideology, and exploring the strategies in the translation of film dialogue subtitles.The present author thinks that as a cross-cultural communication means, film dialogue subtitle translation is inevitably branded with ideology. Critical discourse analysis theory exerts great influence on subtitle translation.First of all, CDA is based on Halliday's systemic functional-grammar, so the research on subtitle translation is conducted from transitivity and modality; since intertextuality also plays an important role in CDA, the author carries on the research from two aspects of report and quotation; moreover, the author goes further to analyze the subtitle translation from the aspect of cohesion devices and coherence.This thesis also analyzes the influence of power and ideology on the selection of translation strategies adopted for film dialogue subtitling. Through the analysis of a large number of examples, this thesis exposes how critical discourse analysis theory manipulates the strategies of film dialogue subtitle translation by mainly discussing deduction, amplification, adaptation and domestication.After making a thorough analysis and a detailed study of film subtitling translation, the author finds that ideology is infiltrated in the whole process of the film dialogue subtitle translation, and interferes with the choice of translation strategies. As ideology is an important factor that can not be ignored in film dialogue subtitle translation, translators should shoulder an important mission for the appropriate choices of translation strategies so as to achieve an effective intercultural communication.
