A Report On The Subtitle Translation Of Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure

With the globalization speeding up,cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries are drawing increasing attention.Film and television works,as a kind of cultural carrier,play an important role in fostering cross-cultural communication.The cartoon Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure is a popular spin-off of the famous Disney film,Tangled.This series tells the story that since untied with her birth parents,Rapunzel adjusts to her life as a princess and continues to have amazing adventures with her friends.And the purpose of her journey is to uncover the mystery of her new 70 feet blond hair's return and explore the mystery of the black rock spikes.This report is based on the translation tasks assigned by a subtitle translation group the writer attended,which is assigned the task of translating English subtitles of Episode 6,Episode 9 and Episode 10 of Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure into Chinese.Episode 6 is about the story that Rapunzel offers her friend advice for dating with a mermaid.Episode 9 is about the story that Rapunzel helps her friend find relatives with the help of a monkey who can tell fortunes.Episode 10 is about the story that Rapunzel fights over a magical statue with her friends.There are two reasons for choosing Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure as translation materials.One is out of love for Disney products,whose language is humorous and plots are exciting.The other is that it is a challenge to translate subtitles of this series.To analyze and review difficulties in this translation practice can get the writer's translation competence improved.In these three episodes,language is concise but with heavily loaded cultural information and distinct characteristics,which make it difficult to translate its English subtitles.The writer has classified two kinds of difficulties,namely,discourse marker words and culture-loaded vocabularies.Actually,these difficulties are common ones during translating subtitles.Therefore,it is of great importance to classify these problems and solve them with proper translation strategies according to the theory of Multimodal Discourse Analysis.There are four parts of this report.The first part is the description of the translation task,including the background of the task,features of the task and significance of the task.The second part is the description of the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation quality control.The third part is the case analysis,presenting translation difficulties and strategies based on Multimodal Discourse Analysis Theory.The fourth part describes unsolved problems and suggestions for further subtitle translation.
