J. R. R. Tolkien, known as the pioneer of modern fantasy literature, has provided a ground breaking imagination for modern fantasy literature by creating a series of novels set in the same fictional universe. Tolkien called the same fictional universe set at these works Secondary world, which provided a new paradigm for later fantasy literature. This thesis takes Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit and The Silmarillionas as the study object, using close reading and background research within the knowledge of mythology, narratology and culture study of architectural space and other subjects in order to analyze the fantasy space of Secondary world, its constructing strategies and aesthetic implication in Tolkien's works. This thesis is divided into four chapters altogether. The first chapter introduces the life of J. R. R. Tolkien, his works and his definition of the concept of Secondary world and the research status at home and abroad. The second chapter explores the representation of Secondary world in Tolkien's works from three aspects: vertical geographical space, diverse political space and polytheistic religion space. Through analyzing the constructing strategies of the fantasy space in Secondary world within the frame of the culture of space, architecture, chromatics and narratology, the third chapter attempts to study how Tolkien constructs a fantasy space that reflects reality with imagination. Chapter four discusses the aesthetic implication of the fantasy space in Secondary world by analyzing the implication of society, history and culture behind the fantasy space.
