This thesis is a translation report on the first two chapters of the book The Chinese in Britain, 1800-Present Economy, Transnationalism, Identity written by the famous overseas Chinese scholars Gregor Benton and Edmund Terence Gomez. The book shows the life of Chinese community in Britain and how they obtain their distinctive identity through economic activities and institutions since the year 1800. With the help of Catford's functional shifts theory, the translator made a detailed analysis on the translation of the first two chapters of the book in the report. The report consists of the following four parts. Part one is the task description, consisting of a brief introduction to the authors and the book. Part two firstly introduces the whole process of translating, which includes preparations the translator has made before the translation, the efforts made during the translation and the polishing work after the translation. Then there comes the main body of the report:case study, which is further divided into the following four parts: 1) the major challenges the translator has encountered in the process of translation, 2) translation shifts serving as the theoretical support in translation, 3) some examples singled out from the translation task analyzed by level shifts, and 4) some other examples singled out from the translation task analyzed by category shifts. Part four is the conclusion which summarizes the experience gained, lessons learned and limitations of this translation task.
