A Study On The English Version Of Selected Works Of Deng Xiaoping (Vol.?):From A Bourdieusian Perspective Of Sociology

Due to different historical choices,as one of the few socialist countries in the world,China has long been criticized and even demonized by Western capitalist countries.But since the late 1980 s when Deng Xiaoping promulgated the reform and open-up policy,China has been becoming stronger and more prosperous with each passing day,which also brings China more and more international attention from Western world.Since then,China has also dedicated itself to cooperation with other countries and begun to develop diplomatic relations with them.These dramatic changes have triggered a wild interest about “the Rise of China” the world over.Westerners attribute China's huge success to its political system.Political texts thus become the windows for them to see what has happened and what will happen in China.So the translation of the post-80 s political texts has found its market and targeted readers.The translation of those texts aim at enhancing the world's understanding of our country,spreading the Chinese culture and strengthening our soft power.The in-depth research on the translation of political texts has become significant accordingly.As the most powerful,persuasive and authoritative political texts in the 1990 s,Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping(Vol.III)became the window through which Westerners know about China in the post-reform era.This research has studied the translation of Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping(Vol.III)from the perspective of Bourdieusian Sociology Theory,a sociological approach to translation studies.After the Cultural Turn in translation studies in the 1990 s,there occurred the Turn of Sociology,which has become one of the focuses of translation studies since then.Sociological translation,which is no longer limited to the traditional paradigm of linguistic and textual analyses,but attaches importance to the social context where a text is produced,has made up for the deficiencies of the previous researches and provided a more comprehensive approach to translation.This thesis makes a tentative study on Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping(Vol.III)by applying Bourdieusian Sociology from three key concepts: Field,Capital and Habitus.The author divides Political Translation Field into different kinds according to the features of Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping(Vol.III).Fields of National Reunification,Ideology,Economic Reform and Diplomatic Relation are categorized to present translation features of Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping(Vol.III).In addition,by analyzing different Capitals such as Symbolic Capital,Economic Capital and Cultural Capital accumulated by the original author,Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping(Vol.III),editing and publishing,the author reaches to the reason why it is accepted and popular among target readers.Finally,the author also makes some efforts to figure out collaborate Habitus of translators and their influence on the translation of political texts with Chinese characteristics and Chinese culture.When it comes to the translation of sentences and clauses with Chinese characteristics or idiolects,she wants to know which is more important to preserve the original style or to present English style in language.To introduce Sociological theory into the translation of Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping(Vol.III)is to make a contribution to the future translations of more Chinese political texts and the publicity of Chinese culture overseas.When translating political writings,the author hopes different political fields could be divided in which the distribution of Capitals and the Habitus of translators could be analyzed to see their influence on the process of translation.
