As a special genre of writing, political texts convey a country’s strategies andpolicies and embody its ideology. Since China’s reform and opening-up, communicationand cooperation between China and foreign countries have become increasinglyfrequent. The world is expecting to know more about the rising China. Serving as animportant bridge for deepening the world’s understanding of China’s national reality, strategies and policies, translations of political texts contribute much to enhancing themutual understanding and spreading Chinese culture. The deep study of translations ofChinese political texts is certainly of great significance.Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping is one of the most representative Chinesepolitical works. It not only has the common features of political texts, but also showsthe unique language characteristics of Deng Xiaoping. Therefore, when translating, translators need to transmit the original information faithfully and reflect the originalfeatures, as well as secure the quality and effect of the translation.Semantic translation and communicative translation, mentioned in Approaches toTranslation by Peter Newmark as his core theory, provide a new perspective for theresearch of translation theory and practice. This thesis intends to combine theapplication of semantic translation and communicative translation with the examples onlexical, syntactical and rhetorical levels in the English version of the third volume ofSelected Works of Deng Xiaoping. The author explores the practicability of these twomethods and concludes two principles in political texts translation, that is, the fidelityand the intelligibility. During the process of translation, a translator should dynamicallyemploy these two methods, and integrate the faithfulness to the original and theconformation to the idiomatic usage of the target language, so as to present a bettertranslation and make contributions to the “going-out” strategy of Chinese culture.
