This is a report on the translation of Bordeaux Legends, a popular science reading related to the study of wine culture. The source text is commissioned by a wine enthusiast from Wine Associaton in Yantai to enrich the cultural connotations of the wine enthusiasts and to advance their wine-tasting skills, whereas there are many cultural barriers involved between the original readers and the target readers due to different ideologies. Andre Lefevere's manipulation theory reveals that factors beyond linguistic aspect impose great influence on the translation activities such as ideology and poetics. Therefore, the strategy of removal of the cultural barriers based on Andre Lefevere's manipulation theory is adopted. The cultural factors contained mainly are “chateaux history”, “chateaux owner”,“natural conditions”, “manufacturing process” and “excellent heritages”. In order to remove the cultural barriers, there are several specific methods adopted in the translation task such as elucidation, combination, addition and editing. Interpreting the concepts which have rich connotations in chateau history can better enrich the wine enthusiasts with their wine-tasting knowledge; adding information to the obscure and ambiguous names in chateaux owners so that the target readers can comprehend the relationship among people and its influence towards wine; deleting the irrelevant information in natural condition can better help the target readers focus their attentions on wine cultivation and vinification; reediting the figures about chateaux in excellent heritages and changing their forms so that the target readers can acquire knowledge about the five famous chateaux quickly.Cultural barriers caused by different ideologies of the original readers and the target readers can be removed by rewriting. Rewriting is a form of manipulation towards the original text according to different target readers and their specific requirements.Translators need to adopt appropriate strategies and methods based on different cultural factors and various requirements.
