An educational game is a computer game(software) which has educational significance and can develop knowledge, skills, emotion, attitude and values of game users. As a subordinate type of serious game not mainly for fun, the positive function of the educational game in teaching and training has been gradually recognized. Computer games have been accepted as an auxiliary means of digital learning. Educational games are becoming one of the best tools to promote and support learning. There has been sharp growth in research into educational games in China, but most of these studies focus on children or the general population, not involve in higher education. The fields of knowledge involved in the research include natural sciences, humanities and high-tech areas. While in teaching practice, humanities have been more involved than science and engineering; the history of art and design has never been included. Although research on educational games has been theoretically divided into four themes as fundamental theory, design and development, basic technology and application, practical development and application is obviously insufficient.The design and implementation of the educational game for the study of Chinese art and design history allows students to learn knowledge with interactive digital technology. As a main course in the theoretical teaching/education in art and design colleges, the knowledge of Chinese art and design history acts as a guide for students to promote their professionalism and fulfill their design practice. It is even noteworthy as indigenous individuals with real design ability are essential for the development of our country according to the strategy for invigorating the country through design put forward in 2014. However, in reality, the courses are stagnating as a result of reduced period distribution, fewer teaching staff and unsatisfactory teaching effectiveness.By means of proper visual orientation, humanized interactive design and reward for check points, the educational game on Chinese art and design can stimulate students' interest in the knowledge point embedded in the game, make learning fun and effective. The design and implementation of the computer game is not only a better means for effective theoretical teaching in art and design colleges, but it can also have a beneficial effect on the development and application of those not involved in this discipline/subject area and the population at large.
