As a medium of the masses and the culture of intensive production, the city has long been a object that many scholars paid attention to. With the process of urbanization, the expression of the city image is becoming more and more important. However, people's perception of a city tend to form a single rigid impression under the background of modernization of the high speed development. Nanjing as a rapidly developing metropolis, has a number of symbols, the imperial capital, Qinhuai, sad city, the capital of the Republic of China, the city of hell, and so on. However, what is the image of Nanjing? How this image is formed? What is the relationship between the image of Nanjing and the space in Nanjing? In this paper, city of documentary as the research object, geography, urban science and cultural studies as the theoretical basis, Kevin Lynch's theory of city image as the research method. Looking for city of documentary as a special cultural mode of production is how to construct the city image and to reveal the inner relation between production and image representation space. Thus having a cognitive system for the formation and expression bout the image of Nanjing.The overall logical structure of this paper is to analyze the image of Nanjing in the city documentary. According to the historical process divided into the ancient capital of Nanjing imagery, Nanjing image and contemporary images of the Republic of China on longitudinal basically. On the basis of the five elements of the image of Kevin Lynch, it is divided into elements of the road, node element, boundary element, element of the region, and the symbol element, which is based on the expression of the image of Nanjing. The city of the ancient capital of Nanjing in the documentary image still stays in the above expression is known to people's gold powder and rouge a terrain of strategic importance image. Because of the limitations of the documentary history of the ancient capital, the image elements of the old and many of the old streets and some have disappeared and the space has not been found and record, leading to a lack of expression of ancient record image space under the lens.
