A Report On The Translation Of Be Careful What You Wish For(Excerpts)(Chapter 33-48)

This is a report on the translation of Be Careful What You Wish For(Chapter 33 to Chapter 48), the fourth instalment in The Clifton Chronicles by the British best-selling author Jeffrey Archer. The Clifton Chronicles, a series of seven volumes follows Harry Clifton‘s life from his birth in 1920 all the way through the present. The fourth volume portrays the Barrington-Clifton family during the years 1957 to 1964. In terms of genre, the book falls into the category of popular fictions, which have long been excluded from the mainstream literature for not being the classics and their commercial and recreational features, and translation studies on which are rather rare.This report, based on this translation practice that totals nearly 70,000 characters and previous studies on information structure, probes into specific translation strategies used in the translation of adverbial clauses, passive constructions and emphatic constructions, including changing grammatical functions of subordinate conjunctions, voice change and the like. In linguistics, information structure is the organization model of given and new information in the course of information transmission on the part of hearer/reader. This perspective makes it feasible for the translator to analyze the clause in such a dynamic way as to reproduce a readable and coherent target text. It is hoped that this report can present some constructive clues to the translation of English popular fictions into Chinese.This report is divided into four parts. Chapter One gives a general description of the translation task, the significance of the task as well as requirements for the task. Chapter Two is devoted to the translation process: preparation, while-translating and proofreading. Chapter Three mainly focuses on the case study in the light of information structure. Chapter Four draws a conclusion on this translation report and points out its limitations and prospects for the future study.
