This paper is focusing on the literary criticism of Hideo Kobayashi's "Private Novel to Discuss", also sometimes his other works were mentioned here. I put in my own understanding on the basis of previous research to make it more clear. And then I tried summarizing the methods and characteristics of his criticismThe first chapter mainly introduced Hideo Kobayashi's general points about Japanese private novel in "Private Novel to Discuss" as well as analyzed the particular fate Japanese private novel had suffered and it's forming reasons. In addition, this part also related to the essential judgment of Japanese Naturalist Literature or private novel which has been defined as Feudal literature by Hideo Kobayashi.The second and third chapter discussed "Social tradition Theory" and "Marxist Literary Theory" in detail which can be in extracted from the "Private Novel Theory". In this paragraph, I pay attention to the development progress and the profound meanings of Kobayashi ‘s "Social tradition Theory" and "Marxist Literary Theory",also saying the relationship between the two significant theory and private novel.The last chapter took his initial criticism especially his "Multifarious Literary Trends" into consideration. From the standpoint of self-consciousness, this part summarized his conventional criticism methods in literary criticism. Self-consciousness is the most importanthing he learned from France Symbolic Poems and he pursued socialized "I". Kobayashi reviewed novel and literary criticism with opinion of literature history. This review and modern literary criticism are mutually exterior and interior, reflecting the anti-modern's attitude of Hideo Kobayashi.
