A Practice Report On The Translation Of Steven Millhuaser's Two Short Stories

This article is a report on translation practice. The original text of the translation practice is from the American writer Steven Millhauser's collection The Knife Thrower. This practice report is a review of the practice concerning the process of translation practice. I chose two short stories from the collection Kaspar Hauser Speaks and A Visit under the instruction of my supervisor.This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction to the background and the content of the translation practice. Chapter two gives an introduction to translation process, which is preliminary translation and proofreading.Chapter three gives an elaboration of the preparation work before translation. Chapter four is the core part of this translation practice report. I analyzed the problems met in the translation and solved these problems through the corresponding methods under the guidance of Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory. Chapter five is the summary of this translation practice and some gains and losses in translation.In the summary part of the translation practice report, I placed importance on my experience of translation and especially on literary translation. Personal translation experience made me realize that translation is not simply translating the source text into the target language, but a complicated task. It requires constant accumulation of culture knowledge and continuous improvement in linguistic competence and literary quality. It also requires extraordinary patience and endurance.
