The artistic characteristics of the oldest national epic in Britain Beowulf are studiedfrom many aspects, mainly are from the theme, character, artistic skill, comparativeresearch and so on. This paper tries to adopt the theory “three Levels of LiteraryTechnique” which is created by SuMin to explore the literariness of Beowulf. To makenew interpretation about the artistic characteristics of Beowulf from the view of literarysymbol and structure. According to the exploration of “three Levels of LiteraryTechnique” about Beowulf, we find that the basic characteristic of Beowulf is imitatinghuman beings’ actions. But, in the actions of imitating human beings, whatever it isminimal literary technique, structural layout, or language style, they all have affectivefactors in some degree. This paper is mainly divided into three parts:The first part is to analysis the characteristic of minimal literary technique inBeowulf according to segmenting the part of fighting against the dragon in Beowulf andcompare with Odyssey and Sir Patrick Spens by the four types of minimal literarytechnique which consists of narration, description, lyric and argumentation. And we cansee the characteristic of minimal technique in Beowulf: narrative and description areequal to the structure and the narriton has the author’s subjective emotions.The second part is to clear the text of Beowulf by integrate literary technique andtext literary technique and compare with Odyssey and Sir Patrick Spens. From theexploration of the textual event structure and textual event characteristic in Beowulf canfind the characteristics of structural layout. It is the affective factors in structural layout.The textual event structure consists of time and inevitability. The textual eventcharacteristic is the repetition of motifs.The third part is to discuss the skills of language expression from the level oflanguage and compare with Odyssey and Sir Patrick Spens. To explore thecharacteristics of language skill from the rhyme, rhetoric, syntax and the lyricalelements of language. They are alliteration, various rhetorical devices, various syntaxand intense lyrical elements of language.
