Objective To investigate the psychological health of contemporary college students, idea about suicide and study the influence of current situation of college students, life state, response to emergent events and self-awareness on suicidal ideation. Aslo, to learn more about the college students' psychology, suicidal ideation process and put forward corresponding countermeasures in view of the suicidal ideation so as to prevent the tragedy. Methods Stratified and cluster random sampling method were used, 2000 cases were randomly selected from each grade students of three universities. Finally, 1884 effective questionnaires were acquired. Questionnaire included suicidal ideation questionnaire(SIOSS), basic information form, living conditions, attitude to the situation, Wallace self-concept and eysenck personality. The incidence of suicide ideation of the contemporary university students and effective factors for suicidal ideation were analyzed through the questionnaire. Results The rate of having suicide ideation among college students reached 11.46%, Statistic analysis demonstrated that the incidence of suicide ideation was associated with gender, grade, family status, pressure, interpersonal relation, problem-solving attitude, characteristic and self-conginition etc(p<0.05). The rate of having suicide ideation is more higher in boys(21.49%) than that in girls(6.28%) and is higher in high-grade students than that in low-grade students. The proportion is highest in junior students, which has 20.37% of the students having suicide ideation. And the proportion in the senior students is second. The rate is also higher in single parent family(29.63%) than that in double parent family. Moreover, there is statistically significance in different pressure groups, high-pressure group(22.22%) > average-pressure group(12.90%) > low-pressure group(2.78%). In addition, the apprehension of interpersonal relationships, high-pressure study and some other situations such as lost love, family problems will make the higher rate of suicidal ideation. Taking into accout problem-solving attitude, the incidence of having suicide ideation is decreased in students who proactively solve problem and are willing to ask for help. Whereas remorse, escaption, fantasy, and rationalizing the problem significantly increased the rate of suicide ideation. In terms of personality, extraversion significantly decreased the rate of suicide ideation while neuroticism tend, psychoticism tend and lying increased it. In terms of self-cognition, students without suicidal ideation have higher level of self-cognition than that with suicidal ideation. The regression analysis demonstrated that gender, age, learning pressure, independent problem-solving skills, remorse, neuroticism are the main factors influencing the suicidal ideation. Pathway analysis showed that life events and self-awareness indirectly affect the occurrence of suicidal ideation through personality traits. Whereas personality traits can also affect the production of suicidal ideation indirectly by tackling styles. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the effect on suicidal ideation of the school type, origin of students, the only condition, the punishment and healthy condition(P > 0.05).Conclusion The incidence of suicide ideation in college students is high, demonstrating that college students face many pressures with the development of the society. Students under pressure don't know how to deal with pressure. Eventually they make themselves increasingly depressed and begin to go to extremes. In addition, other reasons caused the suicide phenomenon. Therefore, we must be cautious on this problem, put forward relevant countermeasures, and prevent the happening of the suicidal behavior.
