Study On Psychological Factors Related To Suicidal Ideation Among Violent Criminals

Objective1.To examine the incidence on suicidal ideation,depression,anxiety,impulsivity and childhood trauma of violent criminals,and to investigate the situation of their census register,employment status,smoking,drinking and drug abuse condition,family information,and former suicidal behavior.2.To explore the relationship between suicidal ideation,depression,anxiety,impulsivity and childhood trauma among violent criminals.And compare suicidal ideation group with non-suicidal ideation group in depression,anxiety,impulsivity and childhood trauma.3.To establish a multi-factor regression module to exqplore the prediction effect of depression,anxiety,impulsivity and childhood trauma on suicidal ideation.Methods1.The research investigated 423 male violent inmates,a convenient sample from one prison in Jiangsu Province of China.Ruling out serious body disease and other mental disorders,and ruling out the dissembling scores of SIOSS>4,there were 399 criminals in the research.There were 67 people whose SIOSS>12 which were regarded as suicidal ideation group.Those SIOSS<12 were regarded as non suicidal ideation group,which got 332 people.2.All violent criminals were assessed by Self-compiled General Information,Self-rating Idea of Suicide Scale(SIOSS),Patient Health Questionnaire(PHQ-9),7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale(GAD-7),Barratt Impulsiveness Scale(BIS-11)and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire(CTQ-SF).3.SPSS22.0 was ustilised in statistical analysis.Descriptive analysis,normality test,chi-square test,independent sample t-test,Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear stepwise regression analysis were used according to data.All tests consider P<0.05 as significant difference in statistics.Results1.People with suicidal ideation and attempted suicide account for 16.79%and 3.26%of the total number of violent criminals respectively.There were significant differences between the group with suicidal ideation and without suicidal ideation group after dividing groups by depression,anxiety and childhood trauma(P<0.01).Two groups did not show significant differences in census register,employment status,smoking and drinking condition.However,they were close to the statistical difference in using drugs(P=0059).There were significantly differences in father and mother care styles(respectly P<0.01,P<0.05).2.The scores of the group with suicidal ideation were higher than those without suicidal ideation group in depression,anxiety,impulsivity(attentional impulsivity,motor impulsivity and non-planning impulsivity)and childhood trauma(emotional abuse,physical abuse,emotional neglect and physical neglect)(all P<0.01).But two groups did not show a significant difference in sex abuse.3.Positive correlation was observed between suicidal ideation,depression,anxiety impulsivity and childhood abuse(r=0.091-0.914,P<0.05),except for sleeping factor was not associated with physical abuse and sex abuse.4.According to the multi-factoral regression module established only by total scores,depression,anxiety,impulsivity and childhood trauma scores all had positive prediction on suicidal ideation(R2= 0.476,SIOSS=-1.727+ 0.322×depression+ 0.051×childhood trauma+ 0.184xanxiety+ 0.053 ximpulsivity),which could explain 47.6%of the variance in suicidal ideation(P<0.01).5.According to the multi-factor regression module established by total and subscales,depression,emotional neglect,anxiety,non-planning impulsivity and emotional abuse scores had positive prediction on suicidal ideation,while physical abuse had negative prediction on suicidal ideation(R2=0.506,SIOSS=-1.88+ 0.344x depression+ 0.155xemotional neglect+ 0.181 xanxiety + 0.11×nonplanning impulsivity+ 0.216xemotional abuse+ 0.125xphysical abuse),which could exqplain 50.6%of the variance in suicidal ideation(P<0.01).Conclusion1.It is common to see suicidal ideation,depression,anxiety,impulsivity and childhood trauma in violent criminals.The parental raising style is associated with suicidal ideation.The suicidal ideation group is generally unhealthy and serious in parental raising.2.It is obviously more serious in depression,anxiety,impulsivity and childhood trauma in suicidal ideation group.Correlations are observed between suicidal ideation,depression,anxiety impulsivity and childhood abuse.3.Depression,anxiety,impulsivity and childhood traouma could positively predict the suicidal ideation.Considering the subscales,depression,emotional neglect,anxiety,non-planning impulsivity and emotional abuse could positively predict the suicidal ideation,while physical abuse negatively predict the suicidal ideation.
