An Exploration Of The Logic Used In Social Science Translation

Logic Translation Theory was developed by Prof. Yan Desheng, and claims that logic should take priority in translations. This theory has been applied to technology, law text translation and translation criticism and has wide acceptance in translation studies,all of which show the theory's vitality and usefulness. However, in previous studies, an exploration of the feasibility for the application of this theory to social science translation has not produced results. Given the importance of social science texts in translation, the imbalance between the theory's incomplete application and the universality of logic challenges the rationality of the theory. This then encumbers the relevance of Logic Translation Theory in certain contexts.As such, this report focuses on The Beginner's Guide to Insight Meditation as translation material and aims at testing the validity of Logic Translation Theory for social science translation. During this process, the principles that the theory expounds are examined. This report consequently argues that social science texts can be translated using the Logic Translation approach. Both an interested readership and accuracy can be ensured under an appropriate logic-oriented approach to the target texts. This report thus shows that this approach could have wider application in this social science area and has the potential to evolve further.This translation practice also deepens the translator's understanding of translation practice. First, it is recommended that the theory's foundation should be updated to predicate logics, which will contribute to the analysis of meaning and structure in a text and will give a long way toward ensuring accurate understanding and translating of source texts. Second, due to the complexity of this process, translation should not be lightly attributed as a part of linguistics. Third, translators should gain the non-linguistic knowledge as far as possible, thus deepening the understanding of the disciplines involved in the source text. In closing, translators also need to master computer technology to improve efficiency of the translating process.
