In recent years,Chinese media have exposed many cases of child abuse,and China can learn from the solutions and prevention programs for child abuse and neglect in developed countries.This translation practice has selected chapters 1,8 and11 from After the Cradle Falls written by two American doctors of sociology Melissa Jonson-Reid and Brett Drake.The three chapters reproduce the history of child abuse and neglect,analyze the causes of abuse,and provide readers with methods to respond to child abuse and protect abused children.It is expected that this translation practice can help to improve awareness of child abuse and neglect in China.Social science texts have their own language characteristics,such as accurate and objective expression and logical thinking.These texts often carry a lot of modifiers in long sentences and passive sentences without actors,which are major problems in translation.In this paper,the difficulties encountered in translation are classified into three categories: logical relations at the lexical levels,logical relations concerning multiple modifiers in complex sentences,and logical relations in passive structures.Accordingly,this paper has adopted different solutions,such as repetition of nouns,semantic amplification method,sequential splitting translation,reverse splitting translation to make the target language more natural and accurate,and fit reading habits of Chinese readers.Consequently,this paper is expected to provide some guidance for future translation of similar texts.
