A Report On The Translation Of The World Is Flat

This paper is a report on the Translation of the The World is Flat, a book which describes the great change that happened in the world in the science, technology and telecommunication, and great development has taken place that connected people very closely from all over the world more than ever before. The author explains why the flattened world emerged in 21 st century, and what it means to countries, societies, companies and individuals. The book also analyzes the successes and challenges brought about by globalization. Besides, the author also introduces some hot industries such as open source, outsourcing, offshore, search engine to reveal the globalization trend.Since the target readers are Chinese, the target text should be in accord with the linguistic habit of the readers, therefore the translation strategy used in this report is the domesticating strategy. To achieve coherence in translation, I use the following methods: adjusting sentence pattern to ensure the coherence of translation text, preserving the coherence devices of the original text in translation, resorting to background knowledge. Coherence is the basic requirement in target text and the essential attribute in translation, which fully embodies the hidden meaning in text and eliminate the ambiguity for readers. And coherence is one of the most important evaluation criterion for readers, only if the target text possesses the coherence can we make the text readable and valuable in delivering information.
