Research On The Traditional Weaving Processes Of The Li Brocade And Design Practice

As an traditional handicraft works of Hainan Province, the Li brocade is well-know around the world with the unique aesthetic and artistic value, and its superb weaving process plays an important role in China's textile science and technology history and has very high historical research value. This paper mainly studies the Li brocade as a traditional weaving technique, the author did on-the-spot investigation to the traditional Li brocade weaving process in the Li District, Hainan Province, it generally introduces the Li brocade from its birth and development, raw material and processing&production procedures, and then states the structure of ancient lap loom and the mechanism of traditional weaving process, deeply explains 3 classical weaving processes weft jacquarding right-side brocade, warp-weft back-and-forth patterns embedding, weft jacquarding back-side brocade, whole-warp sections-weft patterns dig-weaving, warp jacquarding right-side brocade, and center-jacquarding brocade. The paper analyzes the mechanism of weaving from a professional view, provides the drawings of weaving steps, and tries to describe the first batch of China's intangible cultural relics---the Li brocade explicitly and visually, which has significant realistic meanings to protection and inheritance,research and development of the Li brocade weaving process.Based on the study on the traditional Li brocade weaving process, the design practice Matrix's inspiration origins from the interweaving, ups and downs and arrangements of the Li brocade warps and wefts. The series is based on the author's exploring to philosophical cognition and analysis on interweaving of the Li brocade warps and wefts, this series combines the traditional men's wear technique and modern design concept, being an exploring practice to men's wear of new times.
