With the rapid growth of economy, international communication occurs much more frequently than ever before. As a result, the need for professional interpreters is increasing. As consecutive interpretation is widely used in international conferences, interviews, speeches and negotiations, how to improve the interpreter's capability in comprehension becomes a question worth working on.This thesis starts with introducing the concepts of consecutive interpreting and Gile's theory of Comprehension Equation, and giving a brief summary of previous studies concerned. The author analyzes the performance of her own interpreting practice and evaluates the mistakes and merits based on Gile's Theory of Comprehension Equation. The analysis breaks down into three aspects, namely, the interpreter's knowledge of language, his extra-linguistic knowledge and his capability of deliberate analysis. The above discussion leads to a theoretical reflection, on the basis of which the author puts forward some tentative strategies to improve the interpreter's competence in comprehension. The author holds that the interpreter should expand their knowledge of language, accumulate their extra-linguistic knowledge, and improve their analyzing ability. Further aided by a good preparation before interpretation, the interpreter will certainly find it easier to cope with his interpreting task.Hopefully, the author's discussion of the ways of overcoming comprehension obstacles based on the interpreting practice of her own will provide other interpreters, both professionals and amateurs, with some advice of practical value.
