A Contrastive Study Of Death Euphemisms In Chinese And Vietnamese

Euphemism is a kind of social cultural phenomenon, that is very common in all kinds of language. It has been used in every aspect of people's daily life.The use of euphemism "death" is widely used in Chinese and Vietnamese, this as the research object, the author categorized it according to the structure characteristics of the syllable, it is performance characteristics in terms of content and the classification of its rhetorical device.The author gathered up the Chinese and Vietnamese "death" euphemism by its common type. The author also pointed out its differences and the reasons of its use.Moreover, the author made us of description method and interpretation to describe the usage to compare and analyze it.This paper is mainly from the following several aspects:first, it was characterized by syllable structure according to the number of syllables in Chinese and Vietnamese.That is divided into single and multi -syllable. Second, from its content classification and more detailed description (the age of the deceased and identity); characteristics of objects, the deceased's religious belief and folk customs as the standard of classification and analysis. Lastly, in the rhetoric aspect, the paper conducts a comparative analysis by using metaphor and metonymy. Through the above points, the research attempts its cause similarities and differences.This paper provides some suggestions on the learning of Chinese euphemism and intercultural communication from the perspective of foreign language and intercultural communication and translation.Chinese corpus is Zhang Gong Gui editor in chief of the Chinese euphemism Dictionary of the English language (1st edition 1996) (Beijing Language and Culture University Press), Vietnamese corpus is mainly to the rich Vietnamese "(1997 1st Edition) (Cultural Press).
