A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Prepositions And Prepositional Phrases In The Polar Code And Amendments To Its Relevant Conventions

This report summarizes the translation techniques of prepositions and prepositional phrases in the Polar Code and amendments to its relevant conventions by the method of case analysis.The more formal a text is,the more frequent prepositions and prepositional phrases are used in the text.The international maritime conventions,such as the Polar Code and amendments to its relevant conventions,belong to maritime legal documents and are written in solemn and formal style.Therefore,the prepositions are frequently used in these documents.The characteristics of prepositions,including polysemy and conversion,and the difference of Chinese and English in sentence connection make the translation of prepositions and prepositional phrases a tough challenge for translators.Therefore,this translation practice report takes prepositions in the Polar Code as the object of study,and summarizes the characteristics of prepositions,including multiple meanings,belonging to function words,the phenomenon of conversion and various grammatical collocations.This report also analyzes and summarizes the problems in the translation practice and tries to find out the solutions based on the related translation theories and techniques.The solutions include conversion,addition and omission,and negation.This report is divided into four chapters:the first chapter introduces the translation task,including a brief introduction of the original text and the translation task;the second chapter states the translation process,including preparation before translation,description of the translation process,and the follow-up work;the third chapter,main content of the report,is the case analysis which first defines prepositions and introduces the features of prepositions,and then sets forth the translation techniques of prepositions and prepositional phrases;the fourth chapter summarizes the key points of this report and includes the enlightenments obtained from this paper.Through this report,the author intends to accurately and faithfully convey the original meaning and make the translation smooth,natural,and cohesive and adheres to the norms of the target language,and eventually achieves the equivalence between the source language and the target language in function and style.
