E-C Translation Strategies Of Prepositions And Prepositional Phrases

This translation report is based on the translation practice of the first six parts of The Temporary European.This book introduces the s travel experiences in Europe,including the beautiful sceneries,delicacies,and customs of European countries.Besides the record of his travel experience,the text also offers lots of conversations between the author of the source text and local residents so as to provide some practical advice for tourists.This travelogue combines narration with comments,while offering many travel pictures.The book is characteristic of vivid language,flexible sentence structures and extensive use of proper names.In this translation practice,there are some difficulties in translating the proper names and the complex sentences,among which the translation of prepositions and prepositional phrases is the biggest problem.In the first six parts of the source text,prepositions and prepositional phrases appear 720 times in total.Therefore,based on three principles of Skopos theory,the translation strategies of prepositions and prepositional phrases are studied through case analysis.Four translation methods used in this translation practice,conversion,omission,amplification and negation,are summarized.It is hoped that this study can provide some reference for the E-C translation of similar texts.This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One describes the translation task,which mainly introduces the background and significance of the translation task.Chapter Two is about the process of the translation practice,including pre-translation preparation,translation process,and proofreading after translation.Chapter Three elaborates on the theoretical basis of this study,including the definition and classification of prepositions and prepositional phrases,the translation of prepositions and prepositional phrases,and the Skopos theory.Chapter Four is the case study,the main body of the report,in which the translation strategies and methods of prepositions and prepositional phrases are analyzed from the perspective of the three principles of Skopos theory,including conversion,omission,amplification and negation.Chapter Five summarizes the gains and limitations of this translation practice.
