With the developing of technology getting faster,more cars applied and driving safety become an important issue.Traffic accidents conducted by human errors play a large part of road problems,thus Driver Assistance System was developed to improve this situation,and here comes Head Up Display.This study developed a warning system that presented graphic warning message on head up display in vehicle,which provided drivers hazard situation that might happen next,to help drivers avoid dangers.This study consists of two parts.Study 1 is the influence of head up display graphic warning system on driving performance.Experiment 1 testing whether the new developed warning system can improve driving performance.Meanwhile the graphic warning system was developed on head up display as experiment materials.8 scenes were selected as the most dangerous situation in driving and transformed into pictures that suits for presentation on head up display.Skilled drivers were invited to participate in the design and modification of these graphic warnings.Study 2 is the influence factors of graphic warning system on driving performance,consisted of two experiments.Experiment 2: the effect of lead time on driving performance in graphic warning system,exploring the influence of different lead time on driving performance.Experiment 3: the influence of different warning modality on driving performance,testing the difference between graphic warning,sound warning and double warning(use both graphic and sound warning)on driving performance.The main results of this experiment are as follows:1.Drivers under graphic warning condition show better driving performance significantly than those without warning in Collision,Mean deceleration,Accelerator release reaction time,Brake reaction time,Reduced velocity,Reduced energy,Steering reaction time,Mean reaction time,Minimum reaction time;2.Drivers under 2s and 3s lead time conditions show better driving performance significantly than those under other lead time conditions in Mean deceleration,Accelerator release reaction time,Brake reaction time,Brake to max reaction time,Steering reaction time,Mean reaction time;3.Drivers under different warning modality show significant difference on driving performance in Mean deceleration,Accelerator release reaction time,Reduced velocity.Drivers show better performance under graphic warning modality than other modalities in Mean deceleration,show better performance under Sound warning modality than other modalities in Accelerator release reaction time,and show better performance under double warning modality than other modalities in Reduced velocity.This study developed a new graphic warning system on head up display,which showed the potential hazardous situations that driver may encountered on the road to help them avoid these dangers.And the factors lead time and warning modality that may affect the efficiency of this system were also tested by experiments.The result indicated the reliability of this novel warning system,which could provide valuable suggestions for the further applied studies on vehicle warning system developments.
