With the development of globalization,English as an international language, occupies an important position in the college objectives of talent cultivation. In 2007,the Ministry of Education issued the College English Teaching Requirements. In 2013,the College English Teaching Guideline Committee of Shanghai University released the English Reference Framework for College English Teaching(Academic English-oriented)based on the social and economic development of Shanghai. Both of these put forward clear guidance and requirements for public English courses in university and college. As we know, university and college put a lot of manpower and resources in the construction of English courses. Also, students spend a lot of time and effort learning English. However,a survey of graduates in 2015 showed that English did not receive the corresponding attention at work.In order to find the practical English needs of the graduates at work and the reflection of English learning in the university,as well as English learning outcomes, satisfaction and demand for English courses of undergraduates, and thus to make adjustments of the public English curriculum of colleges and universities, effectively improve the English level of graduates and personal qualities, improve the quality of teaching in colleges and universities. This research first conducted telephone interviews with 12 graduates of state-owned enterprises, private enterprises, government agencies and foreign-funded enterprises to understand their needs and use of English proficiency in their respective professions and positions,as well as reflections on public English courses. In addition, this research uses self-compiled questionnaire to investigate the three different levels of colleges and universities in Shanghai, and collect 547 valid questionnaires.Based on the data, there are 3 problems in the English learning and teaching,including(1)the internal motivation of learning English is weak and learning input is not enough;(2)the English ability is weak and the learning effect is not good;(3)the course satisfaction is low and the demand has not been met yet.Combining the interviews of graduates and the survey results of the undergraduates, this thesis draws the following conclusions:the curriculum structure is single and the selection range is too small;curriculum setting deviates from the target and the demand has not been satisfied;the content of the course is not interesting and the assessment methods are lack of validity;the input of students is insufficient and the learning effect needs to be improved;and the English teaching is under the influence of cet-4 and cet-6,the courses,to some extent, are setted to help students to pass the tests Therefore, colleges and universities should increase the categories of foreign language courses, and form a scientific and rational curriculum system;improve the content and methods of English teaching and adjust the assessment methods;enrich the activities under the curriculum and create a language environment;strengthen guidance and improve student motivation. What's more, the government need to promote the reform of the tests to help quicken the adjustment of the curriculum setting. Finally, the shortcomings of the research are summed up and some suggestions and prospects are put forward for further research.
