A Comparative Study On The Conversational Structure Between Charlie Rose Show And One On One

Television interview shows firstly emerged in America and witnessed a fast development in the whole world.Living in an age when the technology develops in full speed,the interview show gradually becomes a familiar form of conversation.Comparing with our daily conversation which follows no certain rules and whose topic and occasion switches optionally,the interview show sticks to some rules.Both Charlie Rose Show and One on One are authoritative one-to-one interview shows which interview famous public figures in all fields.On the basis of the conversational structure theory and data from ten episodes shows of Charlie Rose Show and One on One respectively,this thesis studies the similarities and differences between these two interview shows from the aspects of conversational overall structure and conversational local structure and explores the reasons behind them.The research comparatively analyzes the content and the statistics of the two shows.The study mainly explores: 1)the kind of conversational structure Charlie Rose Show and One on One respectively adopt;2)the similarities and differences between the two shows in terms of conversational structure;3)the reasons behind the similarities and differences.The findings of this research are as follows.Firstly,Charlie Rose Show sticks to strict and complete overall conversational structure,however,One on One adopts relatively loose overall conversational structure.And these two interview shows with different cultural background adopt different local conversational structures to achieve communicative objectives.Secondly,the similarities and differences of the shows are mainly observed in the arrangement of the program,turn-taking control strategies and pragmatic strategies.Thirdly,the reasons behind the similarities and differencesinclude the power distribution between the interviewer and the interviewee,media transmitting cultural and the value system.Besides,Charlie Rose Show advocates individualism and emphasizes the role of the interviewer in the show.It explores the news facts through furious debate.One on One adheres to collectivism and aims to construct the harmonious socialism society.It stresses intimate communication with true feelings.The comparative research of conversational structure of the interview shows is very rare at home and abroad.Exploring and comparing conversational structure of the interview shows in the West and in China helps us further comprehend cultural connotations of the shows.Furthermore,this thesis can enrich pragmatic studies and provide a new way to appreciate the interview.
