The core of the theme-based instruction model is learning language through theme-based content,and this model has been widely used in language education in the United States.The research object of this paper is the application of the theme-based instruction model in advanced Chinese comprehensive courses.The design,implementation and effects of the theme-based instruction are studied by means of classroom observation,case study,survey,interview and text,among other methods.This paper divided into 4 chapters.The first chapter describes the motivations for this research,its object,its methodology and significance,and reviews the existing literature concerning theme-based instruction in China and abroad.The second chapter is based on the pedagogical practice of the Language Flagship Program Nanjing Center.The program's design consists of teaching pedagogical object analysis,situation analysis,goals formulation,curriculum organization,lesson plan design,texts and evaluation.Teaching activities such as warm-up activities,theme introduction,theme learning activities,sharing of learning outcomes,and assessment are carried out.In the third chapter,data from questionnaires and interviews are used to analyze the effectiveness of subject teaching.The survey shows that students have positive attitudes to the theme-based instruction model,and that such a model can effectively improve student's skill at expressing thoughts on specialized topics.Meanwhile,this model enhances students'interest in learning.This survey also reflects the weakness of theme-based instruction model,such as the lack of clarity in evaluation criteria,the fact that chosen materials can't meet the need of all students,and other problems.In the fourth chapter,suggestions are put forward for the improvement of the theme-based instruction model according to its advantages and disadvantages,and the innovation and insufficient of this paper is summarized.
