With the introduction of Buddhism into China,the development of backlight and the advancement of grotto statuary were neck and neck.Researchers headed by Lu Xiuwen mostly concentrated on studying the early grotto backlight,especially in the period of Wei-Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties and Tong-Song Dynasties.And they have made a detailed textual research and chronology about time,shape and decoration.However,because of the limitation of materials,the early backlight mainly presented the stylized array or was drawn and carved in the same plane,in which the decorations were layered at intervals by the clay and mainly ornamentedwith plant lines,flame lines and flower patterns.Besides,the early shape of backlight was mainly concentrated on the forms of circles,lotus leaves and boats.In virtue of the weak visual impact and the lack of impression of space,the Buddha light of these periods presented a weaker visual effect and a weaker meaning of delivering all beings from torment.But it was the backlight of Three body Buddha of Pilu Hall in Guangsheng Temple that broke the deficiency of space and artistic conception for a long time.The paper examines the unique backlight art of Pilu Hall in Guangsheng Temple from five aspects:1.It presents the unity of forms and aesthetics implications in the respect of pattern shaping.The artful treatment techniques including emphasizing key points and the echo of patterns make an space uniformity between aesthetics implications and shapes,which gives us a peaceful and pure Buddhist experience;2.As far as the production of backlight,the craftsmen apply the mortise and tenon structure,a kind of building construction mode,so as to provide a platform on which they can describe a world of Buddha.This mode makes backlight present a strong sense of space;3.A large number of hanging sculptures enhance the religious atmosphere;4.The lotus horseshoe shape not only shows the place where the Buddhist rites are performed,but also releases Buddha nature in space.So it breaks the limitation of previous backlight types;5.The forms and features are different from those of colored sculptures elsewhere.The linear breakthrough of backlight appearance,the deep visual effect of volume and color,the visual effect of myopia and hyperopia formed by the mutual complement between environment and light,all that form an artful and reasonable backlight art with strong space and wide depth,as if we were involved in the Buddhist light.It is these artistic techniques that endow Pilu Hall with unique artistic value.Due to the author's limited academic level,the data is difficult to achieve perfection.If there are some flaws and shortcomings in the paper,I will devotionally expect to the assessment of teachers and experts.
