A Report On Translating Theatre And Opera Translation

This thesis is based on the translation practice on the seventh chapter Theatre and Opera Translation by a famous contemporary translation theorist called Mary Snell-Hornby of the book A Companion to Translation Studies.In this report,the translator discusses the problems she encountered in the process of translation and analyzes the reasons for them.These problems are mainly caused by the different thinking ways and different ways of expressions of the Chinese and people in English-speaking countries.It involves the issues of faithfulness without smoothness and smoothness without faithfulness.In addition,it offers solutions and strategies of these problems,including reorganizing the sentence pattern to achieve smoothness,translating in the original order to achieve faithfulness,reorganizing the sentence pattern to achieve faithfulness,etc.The translator analyzes the problems caused by different thinking and expressing ways of these two different languages in terms of words,phrases and sentences.It also discusses whether we choose to reorganize the sentence pattern to achieve smoothness,or to translate in the original order to achieve faithfulness,or to reorganize the sentence pattern to achieve faithfulness,in order to make the translated text in accordance with the original one both in meaning and in order.The ultimate goal of translation is to make the translated text faithful to the original text without translationese.The key is how to control its degree and try our best to be both faithful and smooth.It has always been a discussion to achieve smoothness or faithfulness.However,it is still less discussed on how to combine the faithfulness with the smoothness to make the translated text be equivalent with the original text in both meaning and order as well as on whether to reorganize the sentence pattern or to translate in the original order.In this report,with some translation practice ideas,the translator offers a summary about the issues of faithfulness and smoothness as well as some strategies of reorganizing the sentence pattern and translating in the original order in the hope of bringing further studies by more translators and researchers on such topic.
