This translation report is based on the translation project of Jury System Around the World, which is an academic paper written by Valerie P.Hans,a professor of law at Cornell University, with an eye to summarizing literature on and comparing implementations of jury system and other forms of lay participation worldwide. The report gives a brief introduction to the translation project, and describes the process of the translation,in which the measures taken to guarantee the quality of the translation is shown. It elaborate on the three typical problems arising in the translation project: the translation of legal terms, long sentences and passive sentences. For each of the problems, the specific difficulties are described, and the solutions including the procedures, strategies and skills used to cope with the difficulties are reported. What follows is a brief summary of these solutions: For legal terms with Chinese equivalents, equivalent translation was applied and for those which have no equivalents in the target language, creative translation was applied. For long sentences, the procedure of sketching charts to change “sentence vines” into “sections of bamboo culm” was followed to help clarify the structure and get a comprehensive understanding of the sentence. And based on the differences between Chinese and English languages, the strategies of following the original syntactic order and reinventing sentence structure were adopted to guide the translation. As for passive sentences, whether to maintain the passive voice or translated it into an active one was analyzed. These solutions presented in this report may provide reference for other translators when they are dealing with similar problems in the translation practice.
