The present translation report is on Chapter Three of The Soul of London,by Ford Madox Hueffer,an English novelist, critic and editor. The series of books on the national character and the life of the English people which he wrote around the time of the World War I have been greatly acclaimed and are well worth introducing to the Chinese readers.By analyzing the original English text and its Chinese translation, the present report sets out to investigate the strategies for the translation of prepositions on the basis of an analysis of my own translation of the prepositions and prepositional phrases in Chapter Three of The Soul of London, aiming to provide strategies and techniques concerning the treatment of prepositions for other translators as well as students of English-Chinese translation. The paper is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the object of study, the features of the original text and the significance of carrying out the translation project. The second part goes on to describe the procedure of the task, involving preparation before translation, the translation strategies and skills that the writer adopted during translation and repeated proofreading after translation. The third part is case analysis which, after a discussion of how to deal with prepositions in English-Chinese translation, mainly examines the strategy of translating English prepositions into Chinese verbs, including prepositional phrases serving as adverbial modifiers and attributes, then analyzes the disposal of the conversion from words to sentence. The last part is the conclusion of this project report.
