The Deflationary Theories Of Truth:From The "Truth" Point Of View

Discussion of "truth" has a long history,many philosophers had put forward their own opinions from different perspectives,and formed different theories of truth.The research for current theory of truth mainly divided into two camps:one is the traditional expansion theory of truth,such as correspondence theory,coherence theory etc.The other is the deflationary theories of truth.The latter is the research object of this paper.The deflationary theories of truth is a transparency proposal about truth,aimed at tightening metaphysical content about "truth",but only to give the"truth" a linguistics investigate value,thereby reducing the highly expectations of the traditional theory of truth research.The deflationary theories of truth is a series of truth view including redundancy theory,perfomative theory,prosententialism and minimalism etc.They at least had reached an agreement in the following three core commitment:Firstly,the"truth" has no physical nature,the truth predicate has no contribution to propositional content.Secondly,the truth predicate played a logical syntactic function,that is,the "truth" has a weak property;Thirdly,the "truth"discussion is meaningful only in the field of linguistic area and all things can we say about "truth" is the meaning and use of the truth predicate.That is to say,the deflationists put all their focus on "truth" in the field of linguistics,and there is nothing to say about the essence of "truth".This paper briefly introduces the development history and types of deflationary theories,from which we can get a preliminary understanding about deflationary theory's main representatives and the core ideas.Then,with the analysis of Tarski' T-statement,compared correspondence theory and deflationary theory,it indicates that these two opinions are actually not opposite to each other,they just talk about different aspects of the "truth",therefore,draw a conclusion that the deflationary theories are mainly research the "truth" in the field of linguistics.Then,the paper specifically introduces the three essential characteristics of deflationary theory.In the last part of this paper,some critiques are introduced,it is concluded that the deflationary theory of truth remains to be further developed and improved.
