Exchanges between China and Botswana have become increasingly frequent. There are obvious differences between the two languages and the two legal systems of the two countries. This thesis conducts research on legal English and its translation by making a study of Unity Dow's Citizenship Case and its version.Obviously, this report is of much significance.Firstly, this thesis introduces the background of this translation project, makes a brief review of the current research status of legal English translation at home and abroad, and explains the research methods.Secondly, the report presents the preparations for this translation task, emphasizes the translator's subjectivity, including his self-restriction and the stress on his sense of responsibility.Next, from the word, sentence and text levels, supplemented by a variety of examples, the thesis proves and illustrates the main translation methods of legal English, including those for translation of the title, legal lexical features, passive sentences and complex sentences, etc. Then, the report explores and exemplifies the application and treatment of the four common cohesive devices in legal English??reference, substitution, ellipsis, and cohesion. It also discusses sufficient and necessary conditions for coherent discourse and investigates how discourse coherence influences translation. Finally, the author summarizes the main ideas of the report, relates points for attention, and points out the deficiencies and further research aspects to be done. This report is intended not only to let readers get familiar with major language features of legal English and to help them enhance their translation skills, but also to provide new perspectives for research into Botswana.
