Language is the carrier of culture; different languages reflect different cultures. As a container of culture, culture-loaded words reflect distinctive geographical environments, life styles, social systems, historical backgrounds, religious beliefs, customs of different countries and people.Based on the samples taken from A Song of Ice and Fire, this thesis analyzes the features of culture-loaded words, and the result shows that there are dual culture-loaded words:firstly, there're cultural differences between China and western countries; secondly, there're cultural differences between the Primary World and the Secondary World. This thesis takes "readers' responses" as the criterion of judgement, and carries out a statistical analysis on the translation strategies of the culture-loaded words in A Song of Ice and Fire from the perspective of functional equivalence. The result shows that the translater of A Song of Ice and Fire mainly adopted free translation. As to those coinages, the translater adoped literal translation to better keep the cultural meaning of the sourse language; what's more, it's better for target language readers to identify themselves with the cultural environment of the Secondary World created by writer. |
