Different countries and peoples enjoy distinctive cultural features that differ from those of others due to the differences in their geographic locations, historical background, social systems, religious beliefs, customs, habits, ideologies, and so forth. Culture-loaded words serve as a language carrier that highlights such cultural differences. Translating culture-loaded words in a proper way is conducive to the effective delivery of cultural connotations and the enrichment of the culture of the target language, thus promoting cultural exchange and transmission. This paper carries out a statistical analysis on the translation strategies of the culture-loaded words in The Republic of Wine from the perspective of functional equivalence. Taking "readers’ responses" as the criterion of judgement, the theory believes that successful translation should enable the readers of a translated text to understand and appreciate the translated text in essentially the same manner as the readers of the source text do, which is closely related to the use of the specific translation strategies. The results of the analysis show that the translator of The Republic of Wine adopts free translation mainly and uses accessible words to convey the cultural connotations of the target language, so that the target language readers can have similar understanding and responses to the source language readers’ and consequently, the goal of functional equivalence is realized. In addition, the translator also flexibly employs several auxiliary translation methods, such as literal translation, transliteration and annotation, in an attempt to deliver the cultural meaning and retain the cultural form of the source language at the same time, thus advancing cultural exchange and transmission. So, it’s clear that the theory of functional equivalence plays a vital role in the translation of culture-loaded words as well as in promoting the transmission of culture.
