This report is based on the translation of Chapter 5, "The Fate of Rhetoric in Education", of The Rhetoric of RHETORIC by Wayne C. Booth, an American rhetorician. Booth points out the inadequacies of rhetorical education (here referred to as Rhet-Ed), stresses the importance of Rhet-Ed and appeals for the improvement of it through practicing LR (Listening Rhetoric).The Skopos theory, first put forward by Hans. Vermeer, a translation theorist of German functional approaches, has been one of mainstream western translation theories and is widely recognized, explored and applied home and abroad. According to Vermeer, choice of translation strategies is determined by the purpose of translational action, that is "the end justifies the means", with addressee being one of the most important factors determining the translation purpose. Skopos theory includes three rules:skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. As the core concept, the skopos rule is the highest principle and overrides the latter two.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, the author explores and summarizes major feasible translation methods or strategies employed in English-Chinese academic translation, including selection of meanings, shift, division and reconstruction of sentences as well as literal and free translation of rhetorical devices, all of which are essential in communicating the original meaning, producing idiomatic renderings and achieving the translating purpose. Through this practice, the author becomes aware that a translator must have a strong sense of responsibility, which means he/she has to keep conscientious in the whole translating process, from preparation, expression to revision for translation of high quality. Meanwhile, the author has a deep understanding of what is required to be a qualified translator, whose theoretical attainment and translation competence are to be improved through constant practice through the improvement of bilingual proficiency and the enrichment of knowledge.
