As is known,academic translation plays a significant role in advancing the dissemination of academic thoughts and exchanges of international academy.Nowadays,the academic communication between China and Western countries is increasingly frequent.Therefore,it goes without saying that the research of academic translation is extremely vital.Since rhetoric is inextricably bound up with translation and of great importance in various western practices,it is extraordinarily momentous to translate academic works concerning rhetoric.This essay is a translation report.The source text is Rhetoric of Inquiry,which is the first chapter of The Rhetoric of the Human Sciences--Language and Argument in Scholarship and Public Affairs.The authors are John S.Nelson,famous professor of political science at the University of Iowa,Allan Megill,professor of history at the University of Virginia and Donald N.McCLOSKEY,distinguished professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.At present,there is no translation of the whole book and its first chapter in China.Combined with some rhetorical theories,this essay is involved in Skopos theory and aims at settling some problems existing in current academic translation.By analyzing some translation samples,under the guidance of the three rules of Skopos theory,namely skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,as well as some rhetorical theories,this essay discusses and concludes some feasible translation strategies,methods as well as skills to be employed in academic translation.Through this practice,the author becomes aware that it is not easy to do an academic translation well and it is necessary to be very careftul and patient,as well as to constantly improve our literary appreciation and practical ability.
