In recent years,the communication channels of popular science program have become wider and more stable along with the gradual development of Science and Education Channel from China Central Television to provincial level television stations.Popular science program has gained rapid expansion in China.However,the audience ratings of Chinese popular science programs are becoming lower and lower and they fail to meet the public's needs for scientific knowledge.In order to change the depressed situation of Chinese popular science program,it is necessary to introduce excellent popular science program from other countries.In this process,translation of foreign popular science program is an indispensable step.The source language text of this translation report is the subtitle text of videos offered by Science Friday,an American popular science website.It belongs to a multiple functional text type of informative,operative and audio-media.The purpose of translating Science Friday videos is to offer advanced information about science and technology for Chinese students,teachers and science amateurs.During translation,the translator followed principles of fidelity,popularization and colloquialization.Under the guidance of these principles,the translator adopted different strategies such as literal translation,annotation,split and linear translation,adjustment of word order,omission and free translation which are suitable for subtitle translation of popular science program.It is expected that the translated text can provide rigorous,interesting and attractive popular science programs.
