This is a report based on the English to Chinese translation project,Major Industries in India. The source text is an English analysis report about major industries in India, such as automobile industry, pharmaceutical industry and food industry, and specific analysis in terms of each industry follows the structure of update usually expressed in words and diagrams, industry introduction, market size, relevant investments, government initiatives and prospect. While, features of the source text and translation difficulties have been manifested in the following aspects: first, the source text is an industry analysis report which has fixed format in target language. However, the author has little knowledge about these reports before receiving the translation project.Second, the source text contains a complex system of terms(namely, economic terms and terms related to multiple industries)and a large number of proper names(mainly, names of companies, official organizations and documents, geographic locations,etc.).But the author is not familiar with all the terms and proper names.Third,in the source text, there are many sentences describing economic data, which have abundant information as well as strict but flexible structures. However, huge discrepancy in sentence patterns of these sentences in English and Chinese becomes one of the major obstacles for the author. The report deeply studies the theory of intertextuality and the definitions, sources and functions of parallel texts, analyzes their relationship and illustrates how to solve the above difficulties by the application of parallel texts under the guidance of intertextuality with examples, embodying the guiding significance of intertextuality and practicability of parallel texts in translation practice. It will be conducive for translators to understand the practical value of intertextuality in the translation of non-literary projects by such exploration and explanation of translation practice from the perspective of parallel texts application under the guidance of intertextuality. The author believes that making better advantage of parallel texts can help translators to improve overall translation efficiency, quality and level. The report has four chapters in total.Chapter One gives a brief introduction of the translation project including its source, major content and translation requirements, features of source text and major difficulties in this translation work, and research significance of this report.Chapter Two presents the theoretical foundation of the report. The theory of intertextuality including its definitions, origin and development and the definitions, sources and functions of parallel texts are stated and the relationship between intertextuality and parallel text is discussed.Chapter Three is about case analysis, the body of the report. In this chapter, applications of parallel texts under the guidance of intertextuality in solving the difficulties in this translation work have been illustrated with examples.Chapter Four, the last part, makes a conclusion of the entire translation practice, reflecting the gains and deficiencies in translating work and giving suggestions for future studies.
