Diaolongbei site in Zaoyang city of Hubei province is one of the biggest sites in the Neolithic period of China.Hubei team which belongs to the Institute of Archaeology of CAS had deeply excavated the site in 1990s.There were so many cultural relics had been dug out.Among the numerous cultural relics unearthed from the Diaolongbei site,painted pottery is the most dazzling.Especially the decorative patterns broke the inherent prejudice that the painted pottery decorative patterns from the Yellow River Basin are better than the Yangtze River Basin.The art of the painted pottery decorative patterns from the Diaolongbei site are beautiful.The decorative patterns have so many items.Whatever the concrete patterns or the abstract patterns are showing the great favor of the nature.Before painting the patterns,our ancestors are used to covering white background on the potteries.The main colors of the patterns are red and black.Different elements are used to produce different visual aesthetic effects;different decorative patterns are tended to harmonious.Due to the special geographical location,Diaolongbei site had been deeply influenced by the Prehistoric culture from the north and south in the course of 1500 years of development.The painted pottery in Diaolongbei site not only contains the same patterns in Yangshao culture painted potteries from the north,but also integrates the elements of the culture in the Yangtze River Basin.In the process of multicultural integration,it eventually forms a kind of painted pottery feature which is different from the northern and southern culture of China and has its own unique style in the Transitional area.Painted pottery as a symbol of the Neolithic Age,the art of the decorative patterns could extremely reflect the spiritual world in the age without words.Our ancestors who lived in the Diaolongbei site advocating nature,loving their life and chasing harmony.They depend on their hands and wisdom to rich the Chinese prehistory culture and laid the foundation of the unique cultural gene of the Chinese nation.
