A Study On The Translation Of Culture-Loaded Terms From The Perspective Of Translator's Subjectivity

Since the "culture turn" of the Translation Studies,translation has been no longer seen as the mere transformation on the language level,but as the spread and communication between different cultures.The numerous cultural differences between countries,caused by historical process,geographical environment and other reasons,bring so many challenges to the translation activity,among which the translation of the culture-loaded terms is one of the biggest.As the subject of translation,translators play an extremely important role in the translation process and are the key link that determines the result of the whole translation work.This paper,as a case study,aims at exploring the embodiment of translator's subjectivity in the translation of culture-loaded terms in Howard Goldblatt's Change,as English version of Bian authored by the Chinese Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan.The paper first gives a brief introduction to the research motivation of this study,the original text Bian and the translation version Change.In the second chapter,the author makes a review on the previous studies on the translation of the culture-loaded terms.Through the review,the author notices that the translator's role is ignored by the previous researchers,so she determines to adopt the translator's subjectivity as the theoretical tool for this study.In the third chapter,the paper introduces definition and influential factors of translator's subjectivity,explores the relationship between culture and language,and tries to make a relatively detailed analysis of strategies to use in different situations for the translation of culture-loaded terms.As the translator's subjectivity is the perspective from which the research for this thesis is conducted,the author also discusses Howard Goldblatt's translation thoughts in this chapter to make preparation for the subsequent case study.Though many scholars have discussed this issue,this thesis is an attempt to offer a new perspective with a rather new material as the case.In the fourth chapter,the author classifies culture-loaded terms in Bian into four categories and illustrates their translations respectively.The author probes into the different strategies that Howard Goldblatt used in different situations and analyzes the reasons for his choices.The last chapter is the conclusion.Through her analysis,the author concludes that in the process of translating culture-loaded terms,the translator's subjectivity still plays an important role.It is mainly embodied on the different strategies that the translator chooses for different situations in order to better convey the meaning and the cultural connotation of the terms in the source text,to guarantee the adequate understanding by the target readers and to represent the original culture in different countries and languages.
