The Presentation And Analysis Of China Natioeal Image From BBC's Chinese Documentaries In 21st Century

Shaping an appropriate national image has become an important way to enhance the country's soft power.In recent years,with the continuous improvement of China's comprehensive national strength,both at home and abroad have maintained sustained attention to the image of China.It is becoming more and more urgent and necessary to"tell a good story of China".While to build a good national image and effective communication cannot be done at one go.Not only the self image,culture type or development needs,but the external attitude of national image also cannot be ignored.We can call everything outside of ourselves as "the other".For the embodying of the self significance,"the other" is not only the reference of self boundary,but also the main part of the mirror effect.Which means we can reconstruct our self image with observating the self image under the view of "the other".China and the West are "the other" to each other.This article is written to explore the China image symbols under the Western view and its presentation with the Independent documentary of BBC.We can also find new ideas for shaping and dissemination the new image of China by the reverse way of researching the characteristics understudied by the western media.This paper is divided into five chapters.Specifically,the first chapter is the introduction part which explaining the background and basis,introducing three theories:THE OTHER THEORY,CODING and DECODING THEORY and FRAME THEORY.Meanwhile the research methods and significance are also further explained.The second chapter of the main content of combing firstly reviews the current situation and deficiencies in the researches about the national image of China.Secondly,it focuses on the evolution of China's image in the West since thirteenth Century,and analyzes the reasons of the react that China's national image has gone though ups and downs under the Western view by now.The third chapter and the fourth chapter are the key chapters of this article,which are the interpretation and analysis about 33 documentaries in new century of China filmed by BBC.In the third chapter,the representative image of the Chinese image in the Western perspective,interpreting the documentary film,finding out the way of expression of the Chinese image and the cognitive way of the west to the Chinese image are the main content.And the fourth chapter would find that Chinese feature has contradiction in Western perspective.Despite the real Chinese image existing,it is still enslaved to the requirements of Western ideology.The last chapter is a summary of the previous four chapters,combined with the status quo for sample analysis and interpretation of the current Chinese image,communication,put forward new ideas to construct Chinese image.And a broader way to tell a good story is also provided,which would make China image communication process more targeted.
