| Western Protestant missionaries had played an important role as the accomplice to the imperialist aggressors in modern times,who often carried the Bible into the hinterland and stole important economic,humanity,military and geographical information of the invaded countries.While they carried out evangelism,they also served for the imperialist invasion.However,these missionaries in China more or less helped promote the cultural exchanges between China and the West,and made a profound significance to the development of China’s historical process.They built hospitals,ran schools,set up magazines,spread religious culture and advanced science and technology of the Western,which,to an extent,enlightened the modern Chinese people.Gutzlaff is one of the early Protestant missionaries coming to China,and he is also the earliest one who preached in the hinterland of China.This paper consists of three parts,introduction,text and conclusion.It studies the background,the process and the profound influence of Gutzlaff’s coastal navigation in China.The introduction is composed of the academic research status at home and abroad and the reasons of the selection of the topic.The text is divided into four parts.Chapter one analyzes the background of Gutzlaff’s coastal navigation in China.By combing the expansion in China since the Catholic Church to Protestantism,the establishment of the two new churches,and China’s prohibition against the Catholicism and the seclusion policy,it explains the risky behavior of Gutzalff’s coastal navigation in China.Chapter two introduces the process of Gutzlaff’s three coastal navigation in China,including the motivation and the route of it and the time it took.Chapter three mainly introduces what Gutzalff saw and heard during the three coastal navigation,when he carried out military reconnaissance at the same,and which helped him know more about the Chinese,especially the local people and the bureaucrats.Chapter four analyzes and demonstrates the profound influence of Gutzlaff’s three navigations on China,which includes the impact of Protestantism cultural missionary in China and the effects of opium smuggling and the Opium War.The conclusion is a summary of the impact of the Gutzlaff’s three navigation. |
