The missionary Guo Shilie?Karl Gutzlaff?has created many works in his life. The identity between independent missionary and merchant has also caused great controversies among fellow missionaries and later scholars.Guo Shilie's works are also more complicated than the contemporary missionaries because of his maverick personality and parallelism. The combing and analysis of his creations is not only an exploration of Guo Shilie's personal missionary thinking, but also it is an excellent platform to show the Western ideological ecology in the early 19th century. This master's thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is based on the biography of Guo Shilie and the research status at home and abroad. The second chapter focuses on the analysis of Guo Shilie's travel writing, and examines his feelings about Chinese society and the formation of his feelings before he officially entered China.Specifically,Guo Shilie's three Chinese coastal travels in 1831-1833have different purposes?either commercial or religious?,and the texts written in turn show differences and contradictories between them. The specific content of this chapter is how Guo Shilie balances personality and belief, business and religion, and the relationship between morality and economy in his text. The third chapter mainly examines the creation of Chinese novels by Guo Shilie.Unlike travel writings, the creation of Chinese novels can be seen as a mix of Western“self”and Chinese reality. In the Chinese novels of missionaries,China participates in the inter-lingual practice of missionary creation in a passive way.In the face of China's appeal to express itself?becoming a subject?,Guo Shilie's response to Chinese discourse is the core content of this chapter. This chapter specifically examines the specific creations of the three Chinese novels named Shu Zui Zhi Dao Zhuan,Shi Fei Lue Lun,and Xiao Xin Xiao Fu.Through the analysis of specific discourses and plots in these novels, this paper analyzes how Guo Shilie responds and manipulates discourse and ideological resources from China to achieve the purpose of mission. The fourth chapter is based on Guo Shilie's globalization idea of connecting China with the world and Xu Jishe's indirect response to Guo Shilie in Ying Huan Zhi Lue.This chapter is divided into two parts. The first part examines Guo Shilie's method of writing global history and Chinese history in Dong Xi Yang Kao Mei Yue Tong Ji Zhuan and Life of Taou-Kwang.Then I explore the ideological roots that Guo Shilie hopes to bring China into the process of globalization. The second part mainly compares the differences between Xu Jishe and Guo Shilie on the world geography and historical narrative methods, and then analyzes the different understandings between them on China's participation in globalization.
