Nowadays, with English films flooding into China, the English-Chinese film translation has become a new hot topic. When it comes to film translation, there are two main methods, namely, subtitling and dubbing.Up till now, plenty of scholars have done researches on subtitling or dubbing, but there is not yet a complete system as guidance.Since most film lines are dialogues, analysis of their interpersonal meaning is the central part of film translation. However,so far there are not many studies on film translation within the framework of interpersonal function.Appraisal theory which is the extension of studies on the interpersonal meaning within Systemic Functional Linguistics has become a new hot tool for discourse analysis, focusing on all kinds of negotiable attitudes in a text.Although appraisal theory has been applied to different fields, its actual application on film translation needs more attention. So far,the application of appraisal theory on both subtitling translation and dubbing translation is still a virgin land. Thus, this thesis uses the Attitude system under Appraisal as the theoretical framework and chooses the well-known Harry Potter film series as a case study, trying to analyze the application value of attitude system in E-C film translation and aiming to find a new appraisal perspective for E-C film translation studies and practice to bridge the gap. This study takes 30 fragments of the famous English fantasy film Harry Potter series as corpus and examines the distribution and features of the atitudinal resources in the source text and two target texts of the 30 selected film fragments. The subtitles of this film series, both the original English film text and the translated Chinese film text, are from TLF(The Last Fantasy),a top fansub group from the Internet, and the dubbing version is produced by Shanghai Film Dubbing Factory. Both quantitative and qualitative methods will be adopted to analyze the distribution and features of attitudinal resources in the source text and two target texts.Based on the data analysis and typical translation examples, this study makes interpersonal meaning comparisons not only between the original film text and its subtitling and dubbing translations respectively but also between the two translation versions themselves. For the purpose of improving the overall quality of film translation, this study will also give advice on how to achieve the interpersonal meaning equivalence in the process of the two kinds of translation. This thesis has found that, all the selected film fragments are rich in attitudinal resources though the three subsystems(Affect,Judgment and Appreciation)are not equally distributed. There are altogether 531 attitudinal resources in the source text, among which 206 instances of Judgment occupy the highest percentage(39%).It is also found that positive attitudes are dominant and most of the attitudinal resources are expressed explicitly.According to the analysis of the two translation versions, most attitudinal meanings are reconstructed when translated, but there still exists inconsistence and even loss of attitudinal meanings possibly due to translators' lack of attention to the attitudinal resources. Thus, the application of attitude system on film translation can help improve the subtitling and dubbing translation quality. With reference to the appraisal analysis, translators can better understand the source text and accordingly produce translation works with more accurate interpersonal meanings. As a comparative study of Harry Potter film subtitling translation and dubbing translation, this thesis has also revealed similarities and differences between the two kinds of translation in terms of reproducing interpersonal meanings. For example, when translating attitudinal resources, the dubbing translation version tends to use appraisal expressions more idiomatic than the subtitling one while the subtitling translator adopts a literal translation method in most cases to be more faithful to the source text.Generally speaking, both the two well-accepted translation versions are of good quality but still have respective room for improvement in terms of the interpersonal meaning construction. This present thesis with the application of appraisal theory on E-C film subtitling and dubbing translation has two main aspects of significance. On the one hand, the use of attitude system as an analysis tool for film translation extends the application field of appraisal theory, which is the theory's enrichment itself. On the other hand, during the E-C film subtitling and dubbing translation practice, attitude system can function as a useful guidance to help translators have a better understanding of the original film text and pay more attention to interpersonal meaning equivalence so as to improve the overall quality of film translation.
